Bedstead Bases

We offer all our brass beds and Victorian bedsteads with a choice of four bases.

Sprung beech slats come as standard on our beds. A slatted base provides flexible support, allowing a little give to any mattress and will be sufficient in most situations. If you require a little more luxury or a very sumptuous feel from a very expensive mattress, you may want to consider purchasing a shallow divan base for your bed. The options are:

Option 1
2” Firm base

2” Firm base

A firm wooden frame base made with peg board base to allow air flow to the mattress. With a firm top this will give a firmer feel to any mattress.

Option 2
4” Firm edge sprung base

4” Firm edge sprung base

With a firm wooden edge surrounding a nest of open coil springs, this base  will give a slightly softer feel to a mattress whilst retaining a strong supportive  outside edge.

Option 3
6” Sprung edge base

5 ½” Sprung edge base

This base has springs from edge to edge  (no wooden edge). This will give a slightly softer feel to a mattress - especially around the outside.

Option 4
Superb Sprung edge base

Superb sprung edge base

This base works in the same way as no 4 - the sprung edge base - but this top-of-the-range base is manufactured with layers of micro-fill pocket sprung springs (individual springs contained in a nested cloth pocket). This base provides the ultimate luxury bed base.

We suggest with options 3, 4, and 5 that the knuckle (and therefore the metal side rail) height is lowered by ordering at a special height of 9” or 10”. This keeps the mattress at a normal height above the floor. Should you require a higher mattress please order the side to your own personal height.
